This Yurok arrow is a close copy of an original from the Lower Klamath River region of NW California. The shaft is made out of a piece of service berry and is tipped with a typical late period side notch point made of yellow jasper. It is held in place with pitch and lashed with sinew painted blue. The fletchings are sepia colored male peacock feathers painted with oil paints to resemble red tail hawk and are glued down with hide glue and lashed with painted sinew lashings. Red and blue trade pigments are used on this arrow for crest colors. The front of the shaft has a red painted sinew wrap on it that is probably a draw point marker. Very fine lines that look like threads are cut into the shaft with horse tail rush at the front and back of the arrow in the same way the old ones were done. The originals this is copied from are some of the sleekest and best made Native arrows I've ever seen. |
