This Sierra Miwok arrow is made from a shoot of syringa. The black obsidian serrated point is set with pitch and lashed with deer sinew. Fletchings are Canada goose glued with hide glue. Red earth ochre, black for soot, and diatomaceous earth is used for the chalk white. Finely ground hematite is sprinkled onto the black paint while still wet to give the paint a sparkly look which the Miwok did on their arrows. This one is based on old specimens in the Peabody Museum. |
