This replica Shoshoni arrow is made from a shoot of syringa and has two wavy grooves in the shaft which are then heated to help keep the shaft from warping. A gray side notched obsidian point akin to the kind Lewis & Clark described on Shoshoni arrows in their journals is held in place with pitch and sinew lashings painted with red ochre which is also used on the cresting. Blue trade pigment is the used for the blue bands. Hen peacock feathers are used to simulate eagle feathers which are glued down with hide glue and lashed with sinew. The nock is somewhat flared to help with the pinch grip release used by many horse peoples such as the Shoshoni. |
