This replica Ishi arrow is copied after the oldest one known. It was shot at a man who was hunting with dogs in 1889 on Antelope Creek just north of the Deer Creek and Mill Creek where Ishi's homeland was. Fortunately the shot missed and Darwin Lyon grabbed the arrow and got out of there fast. This arrow is still in the family. The main shaft is made of syringa and the foreshaft of service berry. The glass point is made from a pale yellowish glass set in place with pitch and lashed with sinew.. The original arrow was fletched with turkey vulture feathers but this one employs hen peacock feathers which closely resemble vulture. Red ochre and and a soft dark blue pigment are used to exactly copy the crest of Ishi's oldest known arrow. This one is as closely made to the original as I could get it. |
