This replica arrow is based on one I saw at the Nez Perce museum in Lapawai ID some years ago. The shaft is made out of syringa and is grooved then heated to help prevent warping. The Nez Perce before iron was available for points often used basalt or agate for their arrow tips which resemble those found on the upper Columbia River in Shahaptan speaking regions. The stemmed point is made from agate and is held in its notch with pitch and lashed with elk sinew painted with red ochre from that region. Yellow ochre and green trade pigments are used for the paint crest. Hen peacock feathers are used to simulate eagle feathers and are glued down with hide glue and lashed with elk sinew. Nez Perce arrows resemble those of plains tribes only tend to be a bit slimmer with slightly less flared nocks. |
