This replica Ishi knife is copied closely after an original of Ishi'sl that was taken from Ishi's hidden camp called 'Grizzly Bears Hiding place" in 1908. The original is housed at the California State Indian Museum in Sacramento CA. The blade is made out of green bottle glass and is sent into a wooden handle with pitch. The handle wood is straight grained and its thought that the original might have been an old tool handle of some sort. This glass knife is very sharp and would easily skin a deer. Its made similar to the old knives, not big long curved blades but sharply shorter stone, flint, or obsidian blades set into wood or antler handles with pitch. Mostly utilitarian, they were often carried in a hunters pack or quiver and made to be used to skin and cut up game instead of sitting on a mantel as a display piece. |
