This replica Ishi arrow is copied after one of his originals housed at the California State Indian Museum in Sacramento CA. It was collected in Ishi's hidden camp called Grizzly Bears Hiding Place in 1908. This arrow has no stone or glass tip but is a sharpened 'self point'. The foreshaft is quite long, 11 1/4" and made of a hard wood shoot. The main shaft is made of syringa. The fletching is peacock wing feathers painted with oil paints to resemble the hawk feathers that are on the original. Red ochre and dark blue pigment are used on this arrow . This arrow is unusual in that instead of wavy lines it has a series of diagonal red and blue dots that run down between the paint ring bands. I've not done one of these before. It is made as closely to the original arrow as I could make it. |
