This replica Hupa arrow is a close copy of a number of originals I've been able to examine over the years. The shaft is made from a shoot of syringa and grooved and heat treated to help keep the shaft from warping which is why it was done on plains arrows as well. The yellowish jasper point is the typical late side notch style from this region and is set into its notch with pitch and sinew painted red. Red and blue pigments were used on this arrow as many of the old once had commercial paints obtained from the local mercantile or trading post. The fletch is Canada goose wing feathers lashed with sinew and glued with hide glue. The sinew wrappings are all painted which was commonly done on these arrows. Fine rings are cut into the shaft with horse tail rush, a trait very commonly seen on CA arrows from the Lower Klamath River. The Yurok, Karok, and Hupa all made archery gear that is very similar. These arrows were shot from short wide powerful sinew backed yew wood bows.
