This replica Comanche arrow is copied after one in a private collection. The shaft is made of a wild hard wood shoot and has a flared bow string nock that helped facilitate the pinch grip arrow release used by the Comnache. The shaft is also grooved with three wavy lines which when fire hardened help keep the shaft from warping. The iron trade point is made out of an old barrel hoop like the old ones were entirely by hand and lashed in with sinew. The cresting is red and yellow ochre, and ground soot used for black.. The blue stained -painted sinew is laundry bluing which many of the Southern Plains tribes often adorned their arrows with. The fletchings are hen peacock wing feathers wrapped with sinew and glued down with hide glue. Many Comanche arrows have an open spiral of sinew wrap that goes through the feather webbing near the string nock which is a bit different than many plains arrows. |
