This is a replica Cayuse arrow closely copied after an original I got to examine. The shaft is made of service berry and the point is made from a barrel hoop like many of the old ones were. The nock is slightly flared to facilitate the pinch grip arrow release. The crest colors closely match the originals which were done with some sort of trade pigment. I used powdered tempra paints which closely matches the old colors. The fletching is hen peacock wing feathers which closely resemble golden eagle...but are legal! They are glued to the shaft with hide glue and lashed with sinew. Dyed red feather tufts are inserted in the front of the feathering like on the old ones. The Cayuse of the NE Oregon Plateau were horse people and were closely aligned with the Nez Perce whose arrows these closely resemble. |
