What a stunning piece of raw material! This beautifully executed Cahokia point by master knapper Mike Cook showcases a spectacular slab of petrified palm wood in rich earth tones — warm tans, rusty browns, and deep mahogany — punctuated throughout by the characteristic dark fossil inclusions that make this material so visually striking.
At 3¼ inches, this is a substantial Cahokia with bold, squared shoulders and clean side notches that frame a strong, tapering blade. The piece is heavily cortex-faced, which is exactly what you want to see with petrified palm — it tells you Cook worked with the natural character of the stone rather than against it, and the result speaks for itself.
Cahokias of this size in quality petrified palm wood don't come around often, and Mike Cook's work needs no introduction to anyone serious about the craft. |
