This arrow is a replica of one that was shot at a young man in 1889 named Darwin Lyons while he was hunting on antelope Creek NE of Chico CA with the dogs. As the story goes the dogs were barking at some thing hiding in a thicket and Darwin threw a rock and heard a very human grunt. After that he had an arrow narrowly miss him and decided it was high time to leave. He grabbed up the arrow and left in a hurry. Years later after Ishi came out of the wilds Darwin went to see him in San Francisco and Ishi recognized him and was actually glad to see him. This arrow is still in the family and this is a close copy of it. It’s undoubtably one of Ishi’s and predates the arrows taken from Grizzly Bears Hiding place by 20 years. The main shaft is made of Saranga and the four shaft is made of service berry. Canada goose feathers are used on this instead of turkey vulture feathers. The point is chipped from a yellowish tinted glass just like the old original one. Red ocher and dark blue pigment are used to closely copy Ishi’s arrow crest design. |
