The Mound Builder culture ranged far and wide in the dense woodlands of the eastern United States during the middle to late Archaic period. So named for the giant earthen structures they left behind. In several of these mounds were found burials containing a myriad of grave goods, including portions of atlatls. The wooden mainshafts having long rotted away, all we are left with are the antler spurs and handles and curiously shaped weights, mostly of stone. Here is my take on this classic thrower with an elk femur handle, whitetail deer antler spur, and mock plum mainshaft with incised designs and deer scapula fetish in place of the traditional stone. |
