This arrow is a close copy of one that was collected in California in 1841 by the Wilkes Expedition. It is probably a Plains or Coastal Miwok arrow instead of a Sierra Miwok one since Wilkes' expedition traveled through the central valley and bay area. Its is made of a shoot of syringa and the point is black obsidian held with pitch and lashed with sinew with multiple notching in it like on the original. This arrow is unusual in that it has two wooden barbs carved in the shaft which are then bent upright. This is a trait I have never seen on other California arrows. Fletchings are snow goose feathers glued down with hide glue and lashed with sinew. The crest paints are white diatomaceous earth, red ochre, a darker hued red ochre and ground soot for black. This amazingly complex paint cresting is how it was on the original arrow. This is a unique and unusual arrow, the original is housed in the Smithsonian. |
