This arrowhead is out of this world! It was flintknapped from a tektite pebble (first by percussion flaking with a sandstone hammerstone, and then finished by pressure flaking).
WHAT IS A TEKTITE?
A tektite is a natural glass like material that is formed by a meteor impact to the Earth that causes the ground to melt. The molten glass is thrown through the air and cools before returning to the Earth's surface. The soils' iron content gave it the characteristic translucent green color which can be viewed when back lit.
This piece was flintknapped from a Thailandite Tektite from the Khorat Plateau in NE Thailand which is part of the Australasian Strewn Field. The impact occurred about 780,000 years ago, but its actual impact location is still unknown.
