Primitive tools were made for functionality not looks. They never decorated tools and nothing more than necessary was ever done to tools. Broken spear points, arrowheads, and knife blades all became tools.
This is a pointed hand hoe as used for preparing soil for planting seed. This piece uses no fasteners, adhesives, or wrappings. It relies on mechanical leverage to keep the blade snuggly in place. The uniquely designed notch allows it to slide onto the main antler tine, then tilting and locking in place to rest against a lower back tine designed to disperse pressure and support the point for aggressive digging. The blade is a hefty piece of Keokuk chert that is strong enough for the job. It has nice percussion scars. The handle is a hand selected piece of whitetail deer antler chosen for its shape, color, and practical use for this application. When slid together, there is no wiggling, jiggling or sloppy play. It doesn't feel fragile or loose. It feels like you made it to use in the field all day. You will enjoy the simplistic beauty of this useful device. It has been antiqued to look aged.
A video of the hand hoes is available here, copy and paste or use link in my profile: http://vimeo.com/9811723
The blade is 4 1/4 x 1 5/8 inches, the handle is 6 1/2 inches long
