Phil Love has worked a gorgeous slab of multi-colored Flintridge chalcedony into a bold, well-executed E-Notch that commands attention the moment it hits the light. The material transitions dramatically from cool aqua-green at the blade and tip — classic, translucent Flintridge at its finest — down through swirling zones of peach, cream, and warm salmon-orange toward the base, where rich iron-oxide red takes over completely. Two distinct color worlds occupying the same stone, and Phil had the eye to exploit every bit of it.
The E-Notch form is executed with confidence. The deep, squared notches are cleanly cut and well-matched, throwing out a pair of robust basal ears that anchor the piece visually and balance the broad, tapering blade above. Flaking across both faces is aggressive and purposeful — wide percussion scars dominate the body, with careful edge retouch running the full length of both blade margins. The tip is sharp and centered.
At 3 9/16 inches this is a substantial, hefty point with serious visual weight. The dramatic color zoning alone would make it a standout in any collection of modern knapped art — the fact that it's knapped by Phil Love makes it a keeper.
