Phil Love has a gift for letting the stone tell the story — and this piece of Flintridge flint has one worth telling.
The material here is absolutely spectacular. This is a riot of warm color: deep rose and brick red swirl against burnt orange and golden yellow, punctuated by broad zones of creamy white and — most dramatically — a vivid pool of aqua-green Flintridge chalcedony that dominates the base and basal ears. It's the kind of color contrast that doesn't look real until you're holding it. No two faces are alike, and the stone's natural waxy luster makes every zone glow.
The form is a classic E-Notch — one of the more visually striking notch styles in the Early Archaic toolkit. Phil has executed the deep, rounded notches cleanly and symmetrically, producing those characteristic squared basal ears that frame the aqua base like a setting around a gemstone. The blade is broad and well-shouldered, tapering confidently to a sharp tip. Flaking across both faces is bold and controlled, with long percussion scars on the body giving way to refined pressure work along the edges.
At 3 9/16 inches this is a substantial point with real visual presence. The combination of Phil Love's craftsmanship and this extraordinary multi-colored Flintridge rough puts it firmly in display-case territory.
