Phil Love doesn't waste good stone — and this piece of Flintridge flint didn't give him much choice but to do it justice.
The material is the immediate conversation-stopper. Cool aqua-blue and soft grey-green Flintridge chalcedony dominate the blade, shot through with inky blue-black inclusions and a constellation of iron-oxide red freckling that scatters across the face like sparks. Then the base arrives in a completely different key — deep burnt orange and warm caramel cortex wraps the ears and stem in rich, earthy color that makes the cool tones of the blade pop even harder by contrast. A thin white chert layer runs through the midsection like a fault line, marking the boundary between those two worlds. It's a genuinely complex, beautiful piece of raw material, and Phil worked it to full advantage.
The E-Notch form is tight and well-proportioned at 3 inches — compact but with real presence. The notches are cleanly executed, producing sturdy squared ears that anchor the warm-toned base. The broad triangular blade tapers decisively to a fine tip. A prominent ripple scar across the face catches the light and gives the piece that unmistakable hand-knapped character that no machine could replicate.
