This is a stunning example of the knappers art from one of the best in the business — Phil Love delivers a classic Dovetail form in a piece of Flintridge flint that stops you cold the moment you pick it up.
The material is the star here. This is rich aqua-green Flintridge chalcedony — the kind of translucent, gemstone-quality flint that made Ohio's Flint Ridge one of the most prized lithic sources in prehistoric North America. Swirls of cream and warm peach cortex marble through the dominant blue-green body, accented by traces of iron-oxide red at the base. The stone has a waxy, almost glassy luster that catches light beautifully from every angle.
At 3 7/16 inches, this is a well-proportioned Dovetail — sometimes called a St. Charles — with the characteristic symmetrical side notches riding low and tight near the base, forming that distinctive dove-tail outline that collectors have chased for generations. Phil's flaking is bold and confident: broad, arching pressure flakes cascade across both faces in near-perfect parallel alignment. The blade edges are crisp and even, tapering to a well-defined tip.
This is the kind of piece that earns a spot in a display case, not a drawer. Whether you collect modern knapped art, Dovetail forms specifically, or simply can't resist exceptional Flintridge material — this one checks every box.
