Phil Love has turned out a stunning Dovetail in Flintridge flint, and the material alone is worth the price of admission — swirling aqua, jade green, and burnt orange playing off a glassy translucent base that lights up like stained glass when held to the light.
At 4 5/16 inches, it's a substantial piece with excellent proportions — long, elegant blade tapering to a needle tip, with crisp, well-defined basal notches that nail the Dovetail form. The flaking is controlled and confident, with broad collateral scars rolling cleanly across both faces. Phil knows how to let the material speak, and here it's shouting.
Flintridge this colorful and this translucent doesn't come cheap or easy, and a knapper of Phil's caliber doesn't waste it. This is display-case work — the kind of piece that draws eyes and holds them.
