Recently received a shipment of California mule fat from my good buddy Ken Villars and have since turned a good portion of it into these fire bow kits. Mule fat is an excellent material for friction fire. I got a sustainable coal on my first attempt with this one. These kits are set up Egyptian style meaning that there is a hole drilled in the spindle that the cord passes through that prevents slippage and negates the need for the bow to be under tension. This helps against string wear and allows for greater speed when drilling. Each hearth board has seven prepared stations, good for three coals each at the minimum, and room for several more. Spindle and hearth board are mule fat, bows are maple, cord is hand twisted hemp, and the bearing block is stone. Kits are $30 each, two for $55, plus S&H. |
