Large celt made out of a spectacular piece of Gowganda tillite. This is a 2 billion year old rock from Northern Ontario, Canada. The Gowganda Formation was mined for silver in the 20th century and small silver inclusions are often seen in pieces of it (including this one).
This material was sometimes used in this area for ground stone tools in prehistoric times. |
