I collected this stone in Ash Fork, Arizona, and for the longest time a group of us flintknappers thought it was basalt. Physically it looks just like basalt, but knaps VERY differently than basalt! I struggled with this idea, before finally suggesting to Jim Winn that it may be a form of dacite. So, we called it dacite until another knapper showed me the geologic maps that named it as rhyolite for the whole area. Sometimes the journey can make for an interesting story.
