Every now and then its fun to make a big old Crump Lake style side notch totally from scratch the old way. This bad boy was percussion flaked from a large raw piece of black obsidian then pressure flaked to finish. These big side notch blades were most likely knives. They generally have expanding notches and a back that slopes inward. They're kind of fun to make. I've skinned elk with these kind of blades with the rough wavy razor sharp pressure flaked edge like this one has. They would keep pressure flaking them to re sharpen until there wasn't much left of them. |
