Thirty plus years past I was gifted an unusual obsidian rock. It traveled with me from my home to the next. Recently I asked Mr. Carney to work it up....flawless! He asked, "Where is this from?" I did not know, so I went on the search, asking many of the west coast knappers and also In-the-Know Rock Folks if they knew of this material and it's origin.
I asked Jim Miller, who is pretty much the rock Guru guy, who has touched and collected most every conchoidal cleaving type of material....he had not seen or known of it.
At this point I'm getting a bit excited!
I eventually contacted Craig Ratzat of http://neolithics.com and asked if he knew what this material might be. He said it sounded like a rare obsidian from Northern Nevada. He knows his passion.....said it was rare and as far as he knew, only small surface finds had been found, decades ago. I emailed him a photo and he confirmed it to be the material he was referring to.....he then stated that the source had not been found, although many attempts had been made.
So now I'm elated to have something so rare.
I have named it AVATAR....

O.K., that's weird, but so is this material. In the main photo there is "red eye" glare showing, which I have not seen in any obsidian or any other material....why is this? Yes, this may be a marketing strategy, but I just can't figure out what's going on with this material.

Most of the finished blades shall be hafted to handles for retail shop/gallery sales. This one and possibly another, I shall offer un-hafted at $29 per inch.
