This agate Columbia River sweep wing is made out of a piece of agate from the hills just south of The Dalles Oregon and is of a type of agate commonly used for points and knives all along that part of the Columbia River. It was kind of fun making a point out of the same stuff the old people used. Many of the points from this region have notched stems which I think was done to thin out the stem so it would fit in the arrow nock. These points often exhibit wide flaring barbs which even Lewis and Clark commented on when they came through the region on their trip west. Many call these points 'Gunthers' but they are decidedly not and are of a different type of point. |
