I've had a bark-on branch of North American maple sitting in my shop for over year with the intention of using it for an axe handle but recently decided it was better suited for an atlatl. I have plenty of clear maple board stock laying around so rather than just having at it with the bandsaw and sanders I decided instead to go abo and work it with stone tools and techniques. I rough shaped with a stone adze and small finishing celt, then carved and planed with flint and obsidian flakes, smoothed with sandstone and, finally, burnished with a smooth river cobble. Even the face on the antler weight was carved using stone flakes. I've been at it off and on between other projects for a couple of months now so I really don't have any idea of the total hours involved but it's less than you might imagine, hence the relatively low sticker price. The fish dart pictured with it is sold separately.
Maple branch (charred, incised decoration, stained with linseed oil and powdered charcoal), hand carved caribou antler weight and spur, deer sinew lashings. |
